THE SAME EVENING, BOTH Zach’s daed, John Yoder, and Katie’s daed, Daniel Lapp, attend a meeting of the community elders. The elders worked through community business: discussing the plans for our next quilt auction, concerns about the integrity of our rotting barn, and Daniel’s hope that the community will help build a new one, sooner, rather than later. After the meeting at the Hershberger house, Daniel pulls John aside for a private chat, just outside on the porch.

“What’s the panic, Daniel?” John asks, only half-joking. “We’ll take care of the barn, soon as this storm comes and goes.”

“It’s not that, John, although I do appreciate it.”

“We look out for each other around here, eh? Not like out there, among the Englischers—”

“Actually, John, that’s what I want to talk to you about ... sort of.”

Ignoring the crickets, and unable to see the round, bright moon or the uncountable stars lurking high above the clouds, John looks at Daniel with a new seriousness. “It’s the kids?”

“Precisely. John, I’m afraid my Katie may be trying to seduce your boy Zach.”

“Seduce? That’s a rather coarse term, Daniel. They’ve been courting for a while now; I hardly think that—”

“It’s not just courting, John! Katie’s afraid that Zach is making plans to leave Lancaster.”

“He may be.”

“And she seems ready to do whatever it takes to change his mind. Whatever it takes, John!”

Silence returns, punctuated by the crickets and the muffled muttering of the elders still inside the house. John gives it a little thought; no more is required.

“Well, that won’t do,” John says.

“It most certainly will not,” Daniel agrees.

“It’s nothing against your Katie, of course. She’s a fine girl, Daniel.”

“And your son will make an excellent husband, I haven’t a doubt.” Daniel lets a nervous moment pass before adding, “If only he’d manage to take a stand.”

“He’s finding his ground. We all do it at one time or another.”

“Yes, John. But for how long a time?” Their words come quicker, their voices louder. But they hush themselves, keenly aware that this is not a conversation either of them wants overheard. Daniel adds, “If something doesn’t change soon, our situation will only get worse.”

“What would you have me do? I’ve tried to get him to take the Kneeling Vow. He’s just not ready. I’m thinking of other ways I can curtail his freedoms in the meantime, but too much of that will send him running into the Englischers’ arms, just as sure as we’re standing here.”

“If that’s God’s will,” Daniel says, “so be it. At least he won’t disgrace my daughter.”

A long moment crawls by, in which John reconsiders his welcome of Daniel’s concerns. “What your daughter does or doesn’t do is no fault of my boy’s, Daniel. If you can’t control her, that’s your problem. If she can’t control herself—”

Daniel sticks an angry finger into John’s face, but John swats it away quickly, angrily. “Don’t you dare cast aspersions on my daughter!” Daniel shouts. “That son of yours doesn’t know what’s good for him; that’s fine.
